Busting the Myths!

Why Autumn is a great season for planting.

Myths about planting in the fall:

These are a few myths we want to bust about planting trees and shrubs this time of year.  They aren’t true!  Fall is one of the BEST times of year to get those beauties in the ground. We are going to share the nitty gritty of why with you right here, right now.

Myth #1 - I don't know if the tree is alive.

The leaves, yes, will be falling off deciduous trees and shrubs over the next month or two.  But your plant is still alive.  In fact, Trees and Shrubs do 80% of their rooting in the fall!  80%!!!  Fall is a great time to plant. All that energy that had been going into keeping those leaves green and strong is now being directed into the root systems.

Planting new items in the fall, with proper watering techniques, ensures that you are giving the best possible focus on establishing those new plants faster. And because the plants are focused on rooting they will have stronger and deeper roots. Come spring, the leaves will be back – better, stronger and faster for having given the roots some focused time to proliferate.

Myth #2 – If the tree is going dormant, I should wait and plant in the spring.

While you can plant any time of year, and spring is a great time to do so, we highly recommend planting in the fall.  New plants focus their energy into the root system rather than the leaves. This means they will establish themselves more quickly in the fall.  There are some key advantages to planting in each season, in spring the variety and size options tend to be greater, though we do bring in truckloads of fresh product specifically for fall planting.

Why do we do this?  Well, we love our customers.  We love having a huge selection year-round for our beloved customers.  And, we LOVE helping give these beautiful plants the best possible start to their new life in your yard (and as we mentioned they do 80% of their rooting in the fall, so…..it’s a win-win-win, major, jumbo, love-fest for us all).

Myth #3 – I won't know the shape of the plant.

The shape of the tree with or without the leaves on it is going to change, drastically so, over the next few years.  No matter what size tree you buy now, the canopy will develop, branch out and expand.  The full-grown, mature shape of a tree (or shrub) will always be how the tree will grow, but the tree you buy today will not be the same in a year – it will literally branch out.Trees and plants to 80% of their root growth in the fall

We find that choosing the tree without leaves better allows you to select a tree with strong structure and balanced branching. This bare bones beauty will only be enhanced when the leaves come on in spring.  And, the faster it establishes a strong, healthy root system, the faster it will grow those leaves. (we are noticing a theme here now, aren’t we?  Spring=flowers, Fall=rooting powers)

Myth #4 – It’s too cold to plant.

Is it though?  Unless the ground is frozen and you can’t dig a hole, you can still plant a tree or shrub.  If you are able to dig up the soil, those roots will be able to grow into the soil.  And, maybe this is TMI, but I sure do prefer all that sweaty work when the temps are lower. Actually, I have my brothers do it for me because they are the best….but, even still, cooler weather makes them happier to help.

There really isn’t a reason to let the cooler weather stop you from planting. Unless, that is, you just do not like being outside if it dips below 60 degrees.  In which case, we raise our cup of hot cocoa to you. We will be here in the summer when you are ready to be outdoors again.

Myth #5 – You don't need to water in winter.

Winter watering is a concern.  Many people think that snow melt is enough to water trees and shrubs, but it really isn’t.  That soft, fluffy snow melts down into very little water and does not reach those roots.  Unless we have another winter like 2022/2023, you will need to have a plan for winter watering.

use ice to water in winterIt’s important to remember that the ground does not stay frozen all the time, it thaws and refreezes throughout the season. When it thaws, those little roots are active and searching for a water source.  Even trees you planted in early spring of this year will still need winter watering - a little snow melt won’t do the trick.

Turning your sprinklers on in winter isn’t necessary, in fact it is detrimental. However, getting some deep soaking into those roots at least once a month is imperative. If you don’t want to hook up your hose in winter, there is a great trick that Rod Glover recommends: dump a few tumblerfuls of ice around the root zone – this way, when it does thaw enough to melt, the ice will water the tree at the exact right time.  And, most folks have ice makers that keep those glossy cubes coming all day, so it takes barely any time or effort.

SO, there you have it.  Myth-busting complete.  Combine this with Ryan's video on water saving techniques, pop in some gorgeous fall blooming perennials, and you have the powerful formula for true fall gardening success.

And, as always, we are here to help with any questions you may have.

See you soon!

How Planting Trees Affects Air Quality

It’s Planting Time: Start Seeding Indoors!

Are you considering planting in the heat?

A lot of people think that you can't plant in the summer/early fall. We have a lot of people ask us is it safe to plant in the heat? Can I still plant? The answer is yes you can! And, you can be very successful. As Ryan Glover likes to say, "if you can dig, you can plant." If you like to dig in the late summer/early fall then why not add some instant shade?

All of the plants and trees we have in the nursery are ready to plant. If you're looking to add a few more trees and shrubs to your yard for some cooling shade, now is a great time to do it. You will want to keep in mind Ryan's 5 tips for planting in the heat.

Ryan's Quick Tips for Planting in the Heat

  1. Dig the hole as deep as the rootball, no deeper.  But 1.5x as wide.
  2. When backfilling the hole after placing the tree (or shrub) use 80% soil to 20% mulch.
  3. Use the hose to settle the soil and saturate the root ball when you first plant.
  4. Hand water with your hose on a slow for 15 to 20 minutes 3x's a week in the heat. (drip systems and sprinkler systems do not tend to saturate the root ball properly)

Learn more about watering techniques here....Remember slow, deep watering is best to give your new plants a great start.

Garden Plant Helleborus: The First Blooms of Spring

Planting a Tree 101

We can, and do, go on and on about the many wonderful ways to garden.  Though spring gets the most attention for it's blooms and greenery, Fall is not to be overlooked.

This is the time of year that the golds, oranges, yellows, reds, purples and everything in between make their spectacular debut.  Did you see this amazing footage of Ogden Valley made by Justin McFarland?  In 60 seconds he captures everything we love about fall.

And, if the colors of the changing season aren't enough, we get the brilliant pansies, mums, coneflower, hydrangea, and so many more fall flowers that bloom right up to winter.

Coneflower

Add in the cooler temperatures to make being outdoors even more enjoyable, and you have a delightful combo that just won't quit!

One of the best things to do this time of year is start thinking about next year.

I know, I know your first thought is "What the heck, isn't it time to sit back and relax in the garden, what do you mean think about next year?"  Well, as things are winding down for the season, it is the perfect time to evaluate where your needs are and do a bit of pre-planning for next year.

- Was there an area that had too much sun and you'd like some shade next year?
- Did you want to put in a water feature, but just couldn't figure out the best way to go about it?
- Is it time to move out the old swing-set and you have no idea what to put in it's place?Landscaping

It's a great time to think about design elements as you won't feel any pressure to hurry up and do it in the spring - you can take time to really evaluate what you want, and, what you need.  Plus, if you want help with ideas, design experts usually have openings in their calendars for consultations...which means, more attention is available to give your project.  Our design team has some of the best in the business, you can submit a request here to get started.

Now, if your landscape is exactly where you want it to be, that is amazing!

Hopefully you are taking advantage of the season, relaxing in your yard and enjoying all the fruits of your labor.

If there is a small area that needs a pop of color or a place where you'd really like to add something for texture, it's a great time to plant.  Trees and shrubs establish well this time of year as they are focusing their energy on root growth.  The cooler temperatures help to prevent transplant shock...and, let's be honest, it's much nicer to dig when the sun isn't giving us 100 degree days, isn't it?

There is always something to do in the garden, planting, trimming, mulching, picking berries or pulling carrots - our garden is the gift that keeps on giving.

If you have any questions or need any help, we are always here and ready to assist.

We're open from 8am-6pm Monday through Saturday. See you soon!

I came by today to check out the sale. I almost turned around because the construction made it such... a pain to get there. The workers weren't very helpful, hence the low rating. I was right next to a lady who asked about the sales and one of the workers just told her to walk around. I bought a raspberry bush and they didn't give me the 30% off discount, but I had already left and didn't want to go back. Meh.read more

I only gave one star because you have to give at least one. If you are a contractor do not send... your customers here to find what they want. Their process of getting contractor pricing is a joke and they treat you like they don’t want your business. Plus they basically have armed guards protecting every exit that treat you like you are a thief. So if you are a contractor trying to make a living then I suggest sending them somewhere else. When I complained to them about the situation, they said that their sales are just fine without contractors. So I personally will never send another customer there. I hope other contractors will choose to do the same.read more

First of all, Glover nursery is great, they have vast array of trees, shrubs, plants,... "accessories", really just about ANYTHING you could want. There are an ample number of employees, who are knowledgeable, helpful and kind. However I'd like to single out one employee in particular, Kylie. I was looking for something related to gardening, but still a bit out of the "norm" for items that typically would be stocked at a nursery. Even though it was something they didn't sell (or make money on), Kylie took the time, made calls to help me find EXACTLY what I had been searching for, and then followed up promptly with me to give me the "source" who could provide it. To me, she absolutely went "above and beyond'! In the future I will definitely be going back to Glover!!!read more

Let me first say that I really liked your sales rep (Amber) outside of that, what an atrocious... experience! I fell in love with the scent of your climbing rose “Rise Up Amberness” so I bought one climber and one regular rose bush on Saturday. It’s now Monday and I had to throw both of them in the trash, which broke my heart. Most of the roses weren’t deadheaded properly, but figured I could simply fix that at home, boy was I wrong! I didn’t even have these roses for two days and the new blooms had wilted just like they had in your nursery. Upon further inspection, I found that there’s a thrip infestation! The wilted blooms weren’t spent blooms, but a result from a sick plant that shouldn’t have been sold in the first place, let alone at full price!I’m not new to gardening and understand that pests come with the territory, but why would I spend almost a $100 between these two bushes just to have to wean both back to health while possibly infesting the rest of my garden that I’ve worked so hard on?!If anyone would’ve even bothered to check to see why the blooms were wilting so quickly they would’ve seen what the problem was. Now I’m stuck with having to go to another nursery to fix a problem that should never have been mine to begin with.read more

Stopped by on a whim, ended up buying a tree and 15 other plants for our yard. Amber was so kind... and helpful. we were very happy with what we chose. Since we weren’t planning on buying plants that day we did not have our truck with us, and it was Saturday closing time. The Employees were so kind and offered to hold our purchased plants until Monday when we could return to pick them up. When we came back to pick up the plants the employee at will call checked our receipt very carefully and informed us that there had been a mistake and we had been charged for the wrong tree. He said that we could not take the tree we had picked. I asked “well this is the tree we want, so what do we need to do?” He treated us like some sort of criminals!! This was not our mistake we paid what we were told on Saturday. He personally escorted us back to the cashier to pay the difference, like we were gonna make a run for it?! Not upset about paying the difference for the tree but upset with how rude the employee was toward us especially since this was their mistake.read more

Overall a 5 star experience most times, but I found it odd today when purchasing a plant that I'd... never grown before and needed information on. I stood in line at the info desk for awhile before an older gentleman employee asked me what questions I had. Instead of answering, he simply referred me to the planting instructions which came with the plant even after I explained that I'd read the plastic tab and still had additional questions that the tab didn't cover. Google was more helpful, but I wanted the experience from a grower for this region's weather/soil/environment.I'd purchased the plant already from them before waiting in line, otherwise I'd probably have just not bothered given the cost and their disinterest in wanting to help it grow.I'll still come back given the huge range of plants that are not always found elsewhere in the valley, but I wont' bother asking for help on a species.read more

We love Glover Nursery. We're from northern Davis County so we don't make it often, but when we do... it's a good experience. The ONLY reason for the lack of 5 stars, is because we've called ahead to confirm inventory and shown up to discover that the info over the phone was inaccurate and they didn't have what we asked for. This is a great local nursery. When you are ready to get better service and products than you can... find at the big box stores, great over to Glover. You'll find better service, better expertise, and surprisingly competitive prices. The plants are localized to our climate, instead of the Bonnie brand that everybody else sells and who knows where are grown. You'll find a large selection of fruit and ornamental trees, bulk soil amendments (bagged too), bedding plants, and the great variety of goods you'd expect to find at a large local nursery. I'm glad a rediscovered this nursery after Western Gardens closed our local store.read more

They have a decent selection of things you can buy at any other garden center at a slightly... inflated price. They are starting to carry more hard to find items. I wish they would carry more native/drought resistant plants.read more

We've been to many garden centers over the years and BY FAR Glover is the best around. Everything... we've purchased from them has been high quality and has done very well in our garden. We've also used their delivery services and well as their planting services- both of which were wonderful! They arrive on time and the work is done very professionally. They also have staff that are very knowledgable about the plants and products they sell, which is something other nurseries are seriously lacking with their employees, so that's something I appreciate! All of our purchases from trees, to flowers to veggies have always done great, I couldn't rave about them more!read more

My girlfriend and I decided as first time plant buyers to make this the first nursery we visited in... our quest to find the perfect ensemble of pet safe, shade friendly, and easy to maintain plants because of the rave reviews Glover's has (which I spent an hour reading through simply because they were pleasant to read). Rett kindly greeted us within about 2 minutes of us starting to browse the rows and rows of plants. He asked what we were looking for. We explained and he quickly pointed us to which spots of the nursery would have plants fitting our criteria. He taught us where to look to find plant information which was very helpful to us newbies. He provided wise words: to start small with our plants and to grow our garden as we became more comfortable with our green thumbs. He answered every question we had with knowledge and the occasional--and very welcomed--joke! We will always come back to Glover's after this amazing experience on our very first visit. Thanks Glover's and thanks Rett!read more

Incredible selection. A sales rep. named Lynn was incredibly helpful to me and took an hour to... listen to what I wanted, present options, and seemed very knowledgeable. He even made sure everything was loaded properly and protected from wind during transport. I appreciated this because it's such a busy time for them! I'll definitely be back and thank you, Lynn!read more
