Did you know landscaping isn’t just for aesthetics? It is of course an enjoyable aspect - who doesn’t love a beautiful yard - but a properly landscaped yard can also save you money on your energy bill. Plants, trees, and shrubs planted in suitable locations are not only pleasing to the eyes but can cool your yard and home during the dog days of summer by providing shade and cooling breezes.

Shade shade from garden trees

The summer months can be almost unbearable when exposed in the sun, but a shade tree can turn a hot backyard into a cool oasis. Shade trees are not only great for escaping the summer heat, but they will also help cool your home. A US Department of Agriculture study found that shade trees reduced annual energy use for cooling by 10 to 50 percent.

Roofs, especially when they are a darker color, absorb heat from the sun, raising your home's temperature and making your Air Conditioner Unit work overtime. Shade trees can help alleviate this effect.

Speaking of AC Units, the same effect that cools your roof can help keep your AC from working overtime. Planting a shrub or bush near the unit can help cool your AC unit. The shade and transpiration from the bush keeps your AC unit from having to work as hard to cool your house, saving energy and lowering your electric bill.

Trees and shrubs planted along the west side of your home will help protect it from the peak afternoon sun. Another sun deflector is ivy, either grown on the outer wall of your home or on trellises.

Create A Cool Breeze

Properly placed, a tree can make shade during the day and create a cool breeze in the evenings.

A landscaper can help with placement but your best pruning practices are to prune low branches as air moves the fastest in the area beneath the lowest branch. In tandem with the trees, shrubs planted beneath a window will push the breeze up into your home.

Planting hardy evergreens along the northwest part of your property will also direct southerly winds towards your home. pruning trees

Some of our favorite fast to medim growing shade trees & shrubs are:

1.Village Green Zelkova

2.Northern Red Oak

The Northern Red Oak is another fast-growing tree that reaches heights of 50-60' with a width of about 40-50'. It turns a lovely dark red during the fall season. The leaves persist on the tree into the winter months. It’s a hardy tree, resistant to pollution with a moderate salt and alkaline tolerance.

3.Tulip Tree

This tree is medium growing with a mature height between 45-60' and a width of 30-40'. It thrives in sunny spots and produces green, orange, and yellow tulip-shaped flowers in late spring. Its pale green leaves turn yellow in fall.

4.Butterfly Bush

These fast-growing bushes reach a height & width of 18-24". It’s a hardy shrub that also likes to be in the sun.  It has purple-blue blooms in the summer and attracts pollinators such as butterflies and hummingbirds.

5.Smoke Bush

This is a deciduous shrub or small tree with beautiful purple-pink smokey plumes and purple leaves. It is a medium growth rate plant, growing 1-2 feet per year with a mature size of about 10’ tall and wide.

6.Ninebark

Ninebark is a great ornamental shrub that is a favorite among gardeners in cold areas because of its hardiness and four-season appeal. Plant the ninebark in sunny spots that get a little bit of shade. Its flowers are attractive to butterflies and other pollinators.

12 Great Trees For Utah

A lot of people ask our team which are the best trees to plant in Utah.  It is never an easy task to choose only a handful out of the hundreds of trees we carry, but, we've done it.  Below are Glover Nursery's Top 12 Trees that are great choices for Utah’s climate and soil conditions.

All of these are in stock now.  We will continue to bring in more fresh plant material throughout the growing season; we don't stop until winter is upon us.  So, if you are looking to add to your landscape, now is a great time to plant a tree for instant summer shade, the coming fall colors and beauty for years to come.

Oh - and if you want a tree but don't want to do the hard part, we offer delivery and planting services to make it super easy for you.

Evergreen Trees for Utah

  1.  Austrian Pine

    • While the Austrian Pine is native to Austria and the surrounding areas, it is a hugely popular tree in Utah and does extremely well in our conditions. At maturity it reaches a height between 50–60 ft with a spread between 20–40 ft. It’s an extremely hardy tree that can handle heat, drought, alkaline and clay soils.
  2. Blue Atlas Cedar

    • Blue Atlas Cedar is a slow growing tree that will top out between 40-60 ft. It’s a popular conifer due to its attractive evergreen blue/silver foliage. Once established, which takes 2-3 growing seasons, the Blue Atlas Cedar is quite drought tolerant.
  3. Bosnian Pine

    • This evergreen is slightly smaller at around 40 feet tall and 10 feet wide when it reaches maturity. It gets unique purple cones and is great a great shape for narrow areas.  It can be helpful with noise control when planted in a cluster.
  4. Deodar Cedar

    • The Deodar Cedar is native to the Himalayas and gets its name from the Sanskrit words meaning “timber of the gods”. These have been documented to have grown up to 240 feet in the wild, but will more than likely reach around 70 feet at maturity with a spread of 20-40 feet in our climate.
  5. Oregon Green Austrian Pine

    • Another variety of Austrian Pine, the Oregon Green is another popular landscape features. Short and stout, a mature Oregon Green Austrian Pine will reach a height of about 10ft and 6ft wide.  It has dark, green, glossy needles that hold tight to the branch giving the appearance similar to a pipe cleaner.

Deciduous Trees for Utah

  1. Goldenrain Tree

    • Goldenrain trees are delicate and graceful in appearance with yellow blossoms and “paper lanterns” dangling from its branches.  Don't let the delicate look fool you as it is actually quite hardy. It will grow to a height around 30-40ft with an approximate width of 35ft. These beauties are native to Asia but made their way to the US in 1763.
  2. Norwegian Sunset Maple

    • If you’re looking for a tree with absolutely stunning fall color, this is your tree. Norwegian Sunset Maples grow to about 35ft tall.  In the autumn, the leaves turn an ombre orange tone that is truly picture perfect. But, don't think the fall is the only season for this tree, oh no!  These make for a fantastic shade tree in the hotter months.
  3. Pacific Sunset Maple

    • This is another beautiful fall tree. The beautiful glossy green leaves of spring and summer turn shades of orange, red, and yellow in the autumn. It’s a nice medium size tree growing to about 30ft when fully grown. The Pacific Sunset Maple is adaptable to a range of growing conditions and temperatures.
  4. Zelkova (All Varieties)

    • Any variety of Zelkova will be a great addition to your Utah yard. They are easy to grow, drought tolerant, cold hardy, and used for ornamental purposes or as a shade trees. The Green Vase and City Sprite varieties are two of the most popular in Utah, their unique shapes add some beautiful dimensions to add contrast and visual interest in your landscape.
  5. Crabapple (All Varieties)

    • Crabapple trees offer great choices for a smaller yards, in park strips, or as a focal point in a garden bed. Their blossoms and fruit will provide lovely pops of color to your landscape, the spring flowers are truly stunning and the fruit will keep the birds visiting throughout the year.  However, if the fruit is not something you want, we have fruitless varieties as well. These blossoms are valuable to pollinators, plus, there are all sorts of recipes you can use with the crabapples! As if that weren't enough, Crabapples do well with Secondary Water
  6. Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry

    • Despite its name Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry is brilliant all year round. In the spring you’ll appreciate the sweet white flowers followed with purple berries in the summer.  For their grand finale, they display brilliant autumn colors. These shrubby trees are historically significant as they made their debut to fame having been planted on George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate.
  7. Streetspire Oak

    • As their name suggests, the Streetspire Oak grows thin and tall which makes them more storm resistant. Their acorns attract wildlife and their dark green leaves turn a lovely rusty red hue in the fall.  A great selection for a narrow areas.

If you have any questions about what tree may be right for your yard, just ask! Our team of experts at Glover Nursery love to help. Before you come into the nursery to pick up your new tree, it is always a good idea to measure the space you’re looking to fill, the kind of water the tree will receive (culinary or secondary) and the type of soil native to your yard.  We will work with these elements in mind to make sure your selection will thrive for years to come.

We can’t wait to help you pick out your new tree!

GO ELSEWHERE. We bought several thousand dollars of trees and shrubs here. Their bookkeeper,... Krystal, had the invoices wrong and insinuated that we stole some shrubs and trees there. We immediately brought them back after realizing THEIR invoicing mistake. They initially refused to take the trees back, and it wasn’t until we said we would dispute it with our card company, they finally accepted them. We’re putting in our yard, so obviously some items didn’t work out. Be warned, if you try to return items, they’ll push back on you — regardless of how much business you’ve given them. After a couple returns, they asked us not to come there anymore — despite us spending THOUSANDS with them. They’re dishonest and rude.We decided since they don’t want our business, to return and cancel all orders with them and go elsewhere. There are several other nurseries in the area that will treat you MUCH better then Glover.read more

Huge selection and very helpful and knowledgeable staff. I’ve bought may plants from them and all... but one have survived, and it was hassle free to return the one that didn’t. I love that they have multiple size selections for plants so that I don’t have to get a tree that’s huge already if I don’t want to. I also appreciate that they label where things are at so that you can find things if you are looking for something specific.read more

I highly suggest this nursery - the only reason it only got a 4-star is because they are very... pricey. Great help, great products, just way too expensive. Parking is a real bear too - I'd suggest going off-hours for the best parking. Everything seems to be great until you have issues with your plants. We are experienced in... gardening/planting and bought some plants from them that are supposed to be under warranty. 2 of 3 were not doing well at all (basically dying) within a couple of months and we came back and see if they can give us a replacement. They told us that they won't do that unless the plants are completely dead. Never heard such a stupid policy... so we'll just wait then until they're dead??! Will not return as customer. We have been frequenting Glover Nursery quite a bit while we are re-landscaping out back yard. We... have found their staff to be extremely helpful and very honest. They also offer up to 5-year warranties on many of their larger plants and trees, if you use certain products when planting. Just had a terrible experience at Glover. I’m a design client and we installed about 40 plants... early spring. Three of the plants didn’t do well despite all others thriving. I called about replacing them under warranty, and they suggested to give them some more time. Three weeks later and still not doing anything. They said to email photos and I did. They said to dig them up and bring them in for credit. And since they didn’t have the same plant in stock, they gave suggestions on alternative plants to replace them. I mention I’ll be in today and when I get to the office, which wasn’t easy to find the right person, they act like they’ve never heard of me. Want me to show them the email chain, want to see the pictures of the dead plants, which I had already sent. Their tone sounded like I was trying to pull one over on them. How hard is it to replace three small plants that never grew after being planted in the first place. They finally give me a credit. Then zero help to find any of the replacement plants. Searching all over the property, finally find them and then the checkout people tell me I can’t buy those because they aren’t the same plant. But they don’t have the plant in inventory, thus the different plant. After arguing with the checkout people, which I feel super bad about, they finally let me go. What a fiasco, and they were the ones that sold me the dormant (actually dead) plants.read more

This is the third year in a row that we have purchased our Christmas tree at this nursery. We have... had very few issues with the trees themselves and the customer service here is top notch. The gentlemen who help take the tree to our car and tie it down are always very kind and professional. They are considerate people who always make sure we are happy with our trees. The only issue we had was the first tree we purchased from them. It did dry out a little quicker than we had planned but luckily it was very close to Christmas, so it was no problem. My girlfriend and I decided as first time plant buyers to make this the first nursery we visited in... our quest to find the perfect ensemble of pet safe, shade friendly, and easy to maintain plants because of the rave reviews Glover's has (which I spent an hour reading through simply because they were pleasant to read). Rett kindly greeted us within about 2 minutes of us starting to browse the rows and rows of plants. He asked what we were looking for. We explained and he quickly pointed us to which spots of the nursery would have plants fitting our criteria. He taught us where to look to find plant information which was very helpful to us newbies. He provided wise words: to start small with our plants and to grow our garden as we became more comfortable with our green thumbs. He answered every question we had with knowledge and the occasional--and very welcomed--joke! We will always come back to Glover's after this amazing experience on our very first visit.
